The second edition of the Gender Café, marked a significant milestone in the ongoing battle for gender equality in Rwanda’s media industry. Building on the success of the first edition, the event focused on empowering young female journalists and equipping them with the tools, confidence, and support to fight sexual harassment and discrimination in their workplaces. the second edition emphasized action, giving young female journalists concrete solutions to the challenges they face.
The event also featured an inspiring keynote address from Nyinawumuntu Ines, the Deputy Director of Radio Rwanda and RBA Radio Station. Sharing her personal journey in the media industry, Ines emphasized the importance of resilience and confidence. Her message was clear: never give up, dream big, and stay confident as you fight for a safer and more equitable media environment.
Ines encouraged the young female journalists in attendance to remain determined, even in the face of challenges, and reminded them that their voices are powerful. “Your dreams are valid,” she told them, “and you have the strength to make a difference.”
The second edition made it clear: the fight against sexual harassment in the media is not over, but there is hope. With the introduction of the Code of Conduct, the safe reporting portal, and the continued commitment to training and empowerment, the Gender Café is pushing for a future where all female journalists can work without fear of harassment or discrimination.
As the Gender Café continues to grow, the impact on Rwanda’s media industry is undeniable. Under the leadership of Nibakwe Edith and with the ongoing support of a growing network of women in media, the Gender Café is creating a platform for lasting change.
